Guernsey Bench

This bench was designed to highlight two things. Number one I wanted to showcase some stout joinery which not only makes the piece more structurally sound but also adds a key design feature. Number two it had to be a minimal clean design nothing to showy just a bench that was clean lined and useful.

The joinery I decided to use for the Guernsey bench is whats know as a sliding dove tail or a french dovetail in which the mechanics of it help keep the bench top flat and allows it to move with seasonal changes in humidity. The other joinery detail is the transition from bench top to undercarriage for this I wanted to to use a tapered cylindrical tenon which fits into the same shaped mortise what this does is as the sitter sits on the bench it tightens the joint.
